Be a Hero, Mentor a Kid!
As a mentor you will have the opportunity to work directly with a youth and their family. You will be
able to enhance their self- esteem, self-confidence, and communication skills. It has been shown
that mentoring reduces delinquent behavior, has a positive effect on personal development, reduces
drug/alcohol use and other anti-social behaviors.
In order to achieve these and certainly other goals, we ask that our mentors make a commitment
to maintain a steady presence in their mentee's life.
Mentors are asked to commit to work with the youth we set them up with on a weekly basis for 3
hours a week for a minimum of 6 months. During the time you spend together, you can help them
with homework or projects, introduce them to a new sport, or innovative ideas they may have not
been exposed to. The real joy comes from just hanging out with your new friend and providing
them with the positive attention they need.
At the end of each week, we ask that our mentors write a quick note about the progress being
made, whether it was learning new information about the child or their family, or telling you how
much better they are doing in school now that you help with homework.
Being a mentor does require commitment. Once we set you up with a child (some of whom have
been on a waiting list for a long time) it is crucial that you follow through. If the relationship is not
carried through, it can actually do more harm to the child than good as they must deal with broken
trust and abandonment issues.
Can you spare a few hours a week? Won’t you take the time to be a mentor?
Make the commitment, Be a Hero, Mentor a Kid!
