As a volunteer, you are truly valued! In fact, we couldn't take care of so many children without you! There are many ways to help and volunteers are able to establish how they want to help and how often. Volunteers are especially amazing because they are new faces for the kids! The kids also know that volunteers don't get paid; they are there because they want to be and because they care.
You are welcome as an individual volunteer and/or as part of a group. You are asked to complete an application and an informal interview will be scheduled at your convenience. Training is provided, dependant upon the job that you have chosen (mentoring, tutoring, assistance with activities, etc.) and the amount of time you choose to spend volunteering is entirely up to you.
Interacting with children who are living in a shelter and who have been hurt by the adults in their lives is very rewarding. You have the opportunity to show them that there are good people in the world and that some adults can be trusted. It doesn't take a lot of time or a huge investment to do this for a child; it simply requires genuine caring and following through with what you have committed to do as a volunteer.
Volunteers are also utilized to serve as mentors, and positive role models for children and youth (in the community) who benefit from having another adult in their lives. You are also welcome to apply for an internship to further your education.
The volunteer application is below for your convenience. Please call 512.754.0500 or email info@gsmyc.org if you have questions.
